Summary

In this latest installment in the cherished No。 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series, Mma Ramotswe must balance family obligations with the growing needs of one of Charlie’s pet projects。

Precious Ramotswe loves her dependable old van。 Yes, it sometimes takes a bit longer to get going now, and it has developed some quirks over the years, but it has always gotten the job done。 This time, though, the world—and Charlie—may be asking too much of it, for when he borrows the beloved vehicle, he returns it damaged。 And, to make matters worse, the interior seems to have acquired an earthy smell that even Precious can’t identify。

But the olfactory issue is not the only mystery that needs solving。 Mma Ramotswe is confronted by a distant relative, Blessing, who asks for help with an ailing cousin。 The help requested is of a distinctly pecuniary nature, which makes both Mr。 J。L。B。 Matekoni and Mma Makutsi suspicious。 And there is no peace at home, either, as the new neighbors are airing their marital grievances rather loudly。 Still, Mma Ramotswe is confident that the solutions to all of these difficulties are there to be discovered—as long as she is led by kindness, grace, and logic and can rely on the counsel of her friends and loved ones。

Perfect for the waning days of the summer。 After having listened to all the other titles in the series, I actually read this one and could hear the characters' voices clearly in my head as well as their beautiful names and the names of all the Botswana towns mentioned。 Perfect for the waning days of the summer。 After having listened to all the other titles in the series, I actually read this one and could hear the characters' voices clearly in my head as well as their beautiful names and the names of all the Botswana towns mentioned。 。。。more

I love Mma Ramotswe with my whole heart。 I love her love of Botswana, and her humanity。 I grabbed this book from the library shelf as soon as I saw it。 So why did I have to force myself to read it? Perhaps because there is so much of the cute conversations, and the day-dreamy conjectures about silly things, and the observations on the state of people today。 And so little of stuff actually happening。I did get a thrill of excitement when I realized that the elephant of the title was not metaphoric I love Mma Ramotswe with my whole heart。 I love her love of Botswana, and her humanity。 I grabbed this book from the library shelf as soon as I saw it。 So why did I have to force myself to read it? Perhaps because there is so much of the cute conversations, and the day-dreamy conjectures about silly things, and the observations on the state of people today。 And so little of stuff actually happening。I did get a thrill of excitement when I realized that the elephant of the title was not metaphorical (as in the tears of the giraffe) but an actual elephant。 I read eagerly to get to the part where the elephant showed up。 But again, there was more talk about the elephant than interaction with the actual elephant。I think that in the earlier books there was more action and more plot。 I think there was more emphasis on the cases the No 1 Ladies Detective Agency handled。 But I could be wrong about that。 Has McCall Smith’s writing about Mma Ramotswe and her beloved Botswana gotten lazy, simply repeating the former successful patterns, or has my reading about it gotten tired?I don’t know。 I will always love with my whole heart the world and characters McCall Smith has created。 But I think I might not read the next book。 And I think that’s all right, because this particular book ends on such a warm, glowing note that it would be the perfect place to end this wonderful series, whether that was McCall Smith’s intention or not。 。。。more

Gentle as ever。 I can't believe I started reading this series EIGHTEEN years ago。。。3。5 rounded to 4。 The musings on the essential gender differences between men and women feel character-appropriate, but a bit stale。 Mma Makutsi's kindness to a mother & baby redeems her brittleness。 Gentle as ever。 I can't believe I started reading this series EIGHTEEN years ago。。。3。5 rounded to 4。 The musings on the essential gender differences between men and women feel character-appropriate, but a bit stale。 Mma Makutsi's kindness to a mother & baby redeems her brittleness。 。。。more

This was an enjoyable read。 It is amazing how this series has evolved yet stayed the same。 I wouldn't say it is my favorite series in the world but it certainly is entertaining to me when a book is needed to read。 This was an enjoyable read。 It is amazing how this series has evolved yet stayed the same。 I wouldn't say it is my favorite series in the world but it certainly is entertaining to me when a book is needed to read。 。。。more

Fires。 Afghanistan。 Haiti。 People screaming everywhere about everything, demanding their rights, their respect, their unfettered freedom。 Craziness。and then there is the Ladies' #1 Detective Society, where thoughtfulness, trust, honor, and respect consciously guide Mma Ramotswe through the perils of life and other people。 She tries not to judge。 She tries not to be unkind。 She tries to hold to a way that life should be, even if Charlie somehow ends up with a baby elephant, Mma Makutsi continues Fires。 Afghanistan。 Haiti。 People screaming everywhere about everything, demanding their rights, their respect, their unfettered freedom。 Craziness。and then there is the Ladies' #1 Detective Society, where thoughtfulness, trust, honor, and respect consciously guide Mma Ramotswe through the perils of life and other people。 She tries not to judge。 She tries not to be unkind。 She tries to hold to a way that life should be, even if Charlie somehow ends up with a baby elephant, Mma Makutsi continues to be judgmental, her tiny white van is in an accident, and a distant cousin tries to scam her for money。Balanced。 Centered。 Kind。 A gift for these utterly crazy times。 。。。more

I wanted more。These books are always a vocabulary lesson。 New words I learned …Somnolent, impecunious, curtilage, badinage, and friable。

I had listened to the entire series on audio because I loved the narrator’s voice。 However, this one had a different narrator and it was horrible! I struggled to finish it。 The voice of Mma Makutsi was so shrill it sounded like shrieking。 All of the voices were particularly disturbing especially since I was used to other voices。 The story was good but I will never listen to another recording!

I put this one into the travel section shelf of MY Books because visiting Mma Mskutsi and Ramotswe is always like taking a trip to a foreign place。 I have rented the DVDs of these series and enjoyed every one of the books and the DVD。 over and over again。 People who like this series are big fans。 Mma's proclivities of talking to her shoes for advice is most unique and the honesty and kindesses of our N0。 1 Ladies Detective Agency founder is in direct opposite from her Co worker and the gargaes I put this one into the travel section shelf of MY Books because visiting Mma Mskutsi and Ramotswe is always like taking a trip to a foreign place。 I have rented the DVDs of these series and enjoyed every one of the books and the DVD。 over and over again。 People who like this series are big fans。 Mma's proclivities of talking to her shoes for advice is most unique and the honesty and kindesses of our N0。 1 Ladies Detective Agency founder is in direct opposite from her Co worker and the gargaes helpers who are simply hilarious! Always a pleasure to read these books。

I have always loved this series。 This is the first book that did not have a mystery to solve and was mostly philosophical regarding relationships。 Well written as usual but not sure why the elephant was included。 Was just disappointed with the story。

Joe Bellew

Not the best in the series but still an enjoyable read。

Although I liked this book, I did not like the narrator。 They changed the narrator from Lisette who had done the previous 20 books。

The story was much as usual, which I enjoy。 I listened to the audiobook and after 20 previous audiobooks narrated by the same wonderful reader, I was so annoyed by this new reader that I had trouble focusing on the story。 I would give the reader a 1 just because the character’s voices were so different and at times screechy and annoying。 I felt like I had lost old friends。

Linda

I really like this series and read them as soon as I can。

I have been a fan of the Ladies No。 1 Detective Agency since the beginning, so I periodically catch up on the books I have missed, and this was one of them。 However, I was very disappointed with this particular one --- I have always listened to the audial versions of these books, and the reader has been changed。 I am not sure why, but it definitely had a huge effect on me。 All the voices were different for the characters ---- to the point of being annoying。 Mama Khutsi's voice was so raspy and b I have been a fan of the Ladies No。 1 Detective Agency since the beginning, so I periodically catch up on the books I have missed, and this was one of them。 However, I was very disappointed with this particular one --- I have always listened to the audial versions of these books, and the reader has been changed。 I am not sure why, but it definitely had a huge effect on me。 All the voices were different for the characters ---- to the point of being annoying。 Mama Khutsi's voice was so raspy and brought so much negativity to her (means-well) character that I found hers and Charlie's voices so annoying and bothersome to listen to --- and they had most of the dialogue for this book。 I found this book tedious and the only story I followed was the elephant one --- I think with the better reader of the past, this book would have been one of the funnier ones to listen to, but now I can't recommend it --- mostly because the new reader has an annoying voice --- I'm not sure I will ever keep up with the books in this series again, at least the audial version。 Very disappointed。 。。。more

I generally like to vary my reading, and I know that by including whatever the most recent Ladies Detective agency book on my list that I will get to relax a bit, and let down my analytical skeptical guard a bit。 So much feels just copied and pasted from previous volumes (entire paragraphs and conversations) I sometimes feel I could sleep through it。 This one didn't have much detectiving going on, but I found Mma Ramotswe's thoughts about how how some people have more than others, and how we all I generally like to vary my reading, and I know that by including whatever the most recent Ladies Detective agency book on my list that I will get to relax a bit, and let down my analytical skeptical guard a bit。 So much feels just copied and pasted from previous volumes (entire paragraphs and conversations) I sometimes feel I could sleep through it。 This one didn't have much detectiving going on, but I found Mma Ramotswe's thoughts about how how some people have more than others, and how we all need to move forward, but no one wants to give up their advantages to be a bit poignant。 The elephant challenge was sweet how all worked on it, and helped some of the group see how others had matured。 。。。more

Precious finds herself with new neighbours who might be unhappy, a request for money from a distant cousin that seems dubious and dealing with another miscalculation by Charlie。 Utterly delightful。 There is no other character as kind and forgiving as Precious, and no other series as heartwarming or enjoyable。
